Case Study

Fearnley Evison

Where am I in my career?

I have recently crossed the threshold beyond being considered the “Rising Generation” as I have been involved in Radiation Protection for over 10 years now. Within the last few years, I have achieved certification as a Laser Protection Adviser and Radiation Protection Adviser now primarily working in healthcare. These achievements are the required standard for those wanting to advise on laser and radiation safety in the workplace. I have built strong rapports with peers involved in many parts of radiation safety from those who work with the equipment to Radiation Safety Committees to company Directors. My experience and qualification allow me to have influence over how employers protect their staff from hazards presented by non-ionising and ionising radiation.

Some High Points.

I got to see a variety of sectors and uses of non-ionising and ionising radiation early in my career. My first job was producing radiation computer models for the NHS’s first high energy Proton Therapy Centre to inform the shielding strategy for the building works. I later then got to perform the shielding integrity testing to verify that the installation of the shielding designs was effective. I enjoy building good relationships with those I provide support to and getting to have an impact on safety culture at various levels within an organisation.

Some Low Points.

I have found that my development is rarely as high on my employer’s priority as it is on mine. The limited opportunities available for training are often not seen as beneficial to the employer or are given to other trainee colleagues. I find it frustrating when bumptious people seem to progress quicker in their career.

Would I Recommend the Journey, why?

There’s a type of person who can find this work very stimulating and rewarding. I need variety, have repour with peers, be largely self-managed and have influence. This work allows me to do that, and I would recommend it to anybody who has the same motivation.
