I currently work at Leonardo as an RF Safety Specialist, with a role focused on radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic field (EMF) safety, building on nearly two decades of experience in highly technical roles within telecommunications and aerospace & defence industries.
My journey began with a BEng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast, where I later completed a PhD with the High Frequency Electronic Circuits Group. My research explored how engineered textured surfaces can manipulate and suppress microwave radiation, with the aim of improving antenna performance. After this, I moved into industry, primarily focusing on antenna design for telecommunications backhaul systems.
Following my work in the telecommunications industry, I took on the role of RF Safety Specialist at Leonardo’s Edinburgh site, which designs and manufactures advanced multi-role surveillance radars and countermeasure systems. My role involves assessing and managing RF and EMF hazards to minimise the likelihood of personnel being exposed to potentially hazardous levels and ensuring compliance with regulations. I bridge the gap between engineering, safety and regulation; making sure complex RF systems can operate effectively without compromising human safety. Connecting with fellow RF safety professionals has been one of the most valuable and enjoyable aspects of the role. Whether it’s discussing experiences, unusual exposure scenarios, or regulations, those conversations lead to insights that are rarely found in academia.
The early part of my career – starting with figuring out how to tame microwave radiation in the lab and moving onto designing antennas for real world applications – has helped me build knowledge and experience relevant to managing EMF hazards safely and effectively across a range of applications. I must admit that I didn’t initially set out to become an RF Safety Specialist, but by following my interests and keeping an open mind during my career, I found a role that is extremely important and challenging. For anyone with a technical background who enjoys problem solving, has an eye for detail and wants their work to have a real impact, it’s a very rewarding path.
